Why choose this tour?
Ideal for nature lovers and beginners hikers, this tour is perfect for discovering the local dishes and the beautiful landscapes of the shores of the largest volcanic lake in Europe.
DAY 1: Bolsena
Morning transfer. Arrival in the early afternoon.
Guided visit of Bolsena during the afternoon, a picturesque village overlooking the Lake, whose origins date back to the 3rd century BC. The tour will include a guided visit of the catacombs in the Basilica of Santa Cristina, which dates back to 4th century AD. The catacombs consist of a labyrinth of corridors carved in the rock of the mountain. This cathedral/sanctuary was a stage for pilgrims on the route of the ancient Via Francigena to Rome. Two major events marked this place that has its roots in Christianity: the martyrdom of Santa Cristina and the Eucharistic Miracle of 1263, both tangible signs of Christ’s work on humans.
At the end of the visit, transfer to the hotel, dinner and overnight accommodation.
DAY 2: From Orvieto to Bolsena (20 km, 6 h)
This trekking day will lead us into woods where it is possible to find Etruscan necropolis and ancient Roman streets, such as the “Via Cassia Traianea”. Our hike will end in Bolsena, among wooded shores where the Etruscan developed important trading areas.
At the end of the hike, guided visit and tasting in a local olive oil mill.
Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 3: From Bolsena to San Lorenzo Nuovo (16 km, 5 h)
Walking along the ancient “Via Francigena” (the route that in medieval times connected Canterbury to Rome), the hikers will reach plateaus where they can enjoy a breathtaking view. Point of arrival of this first trekking day is the hillside village of San Lorenzo Nuovo, located out of beaten tracks.
At the end of the hike, return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 4: From San Lorenzo Novo to Capodimonte (19 km, 6 h)
Passing through secondary roads, we skirt the lake’s shores rich in bird life, until we reach the ancient site of “Bisentium”, an important Etruscan city perched on a rocky promontory.
At the end of the hike, return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
DAY 5: From Marta to Montefiascone (16 km, 5 h)
From Capodimonte, passing through hidden paths surrounded by woods and rocks, we reach the tiny firshermen village of Marta that overlooks the lake. Here, fishing activities are extremely important for the local economy.
Finally, we walk towards Mount Falisco.
At the end of the hike, guided visit and tasting in a local winery.
Return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.
We don’t want our guests to leave without a tasty souvenir of this trip: that is why a gastronomic lottery of typical Italian cold cuts will be offered during the last dinner together, as well as a parting gift: a bottle of high quality local extra virgin olive oil.
DAY 6: From Montefiascone to Bolsena (20 km, 6 h)
With this last trekking day, we end the circumnavigation of Lake Bolsena. The paths we walk are the ones that, in ancient times, pilgrims used to travel when heading towards the “Eternal City” of Rome. From above, the view reveals the beauty of the islands Martana and Bisentina.
Departure and return to home.
