Why choose this tour?

Ideal for those who love art and sacred places, this tour allows to discover the most suggestive abbeys of the Ciociaria and major centres of worship in the territory, where faith was made into stone and painting by the local craftmanship

DAY 1: Anagni

Morning transfer. Arrival in Anagni in the first afternoon.

Guided visit of Anagni during the afternoon. Known as “The town of the Popes”, Anagni was inhabited since ancient times. Here important historical events took place: the “Slap of Anagni” is one of them. The town still has a medieval appearance and a tight bond with old traditions and religion.

At the end of the visit, transfer to the hotel, dinner and overnight accommodation.

DAY 2: Boville Ernica, Isola dei Liri and San Domenico a Sora Abbey

Guided visit of Boville Ernica during the morning. Boville Ernica, whose name recalls the cult of the God “Bove”, has its roots in pre-Roman times. The town’s artistic and monumental heritage is remarkable: the church of Saint Pietro Ispano houses a rare mosaic made by Giotto. Boville Ernica is surrounded by walls with eighteen towers, from which it is possible to admire the charming setting offered by Mounts Ernici.

At the end of the visit, lunch based on typical products in a restaurant of the area.

The tour continues with the visit of Isola del Liri. The centre of the town stands on an island that rise in the Liri River: the river, near the ancient walls of Boncompagni Castle, forms two waterfalls with a 30 meters drop. Thanks to the abundance of waters, between the 19th and the 20th century, arose flourishing settlements of paper mills.

The tour continues with the guided visit of San Domenico a Sora Abbey. Founded by Saint Domenico of Foligno, the abbey was a public seal of penitence and conversion of the governor of Sora. On the inside, there is a crypt (which is, in fact, a small church) with the sacred remains of Saint Domenico, which is considered the patron saint of snakebites.

DAY 3: Montecassino Abbey, Casinum Archeological Park, Historiae Museum and Commonwealth Burial Site

In the morning, guided visit of the Abbey of Montecassino. Founded in 529 by San Benedetto da Norcia, it is one of the most famous abbeys in the world. Over centuries, the Abbey has undergone destructions, looting, earthquakes and reconstructions. In 577, it was destroyed by the Lombards and, in 887, by the Saracens. Located at the top of a 520 meters high mountain and with its twenty thousand square meters, it represents a point of reference in the area, as well as a destination for thousands of pilgrims from all over the world.

The tour continues with the visit of the Casinum Archaeological Park. The tour begins in the Museum and continues into the Lapidarium, which consists of inscriptions and architectural remains that were part of an urban area. In the Park it is also possible to admire the Forum, the Theatre, the Necropolis and the mausoleum of Ummidia Quadritilla, the Roman matron who, in the 1st century AD, built a temple and an amphitheatre at her own expense.

At the end of the visit, lunch in a restaurant of the area.

Guided visit of the Historiale Museum in the early afternoon. Conceived by Carlo Rambaldi, Oscar winner for the special effects of the films “ET” and “Alien”, this museum is divided into twelve rooms, which show the most emblematic stages of the twentieth century’s history.

In the late afternoon, guided visit of the Commonwealth Burial Site. Over 4.000 British, Canadian, New Zealander, South African, Indian and Pakistani soldiers rest in the cemetery. Of all these bodies, almost 300 are not identified.

At the end of the visit, return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

We don’t want our guests to leave without a tasty souvenir of this trip: that is why a gastronomic lottery of typical Italian cold cuts will be offered during the last dinner together, as well as a parting gift: a bottle of high quality local extra virgin olive oil.

DAY 4: Subiaco

In the morning, guided visit of the “Sacro Speco”, a Benedictine monastery built on several levels on a cliff overhanging a stream. On the inside, there are medieval frescoes and the cave where Saint Benedetto retired.

At the end of the visit, lunch based on typical products in a restaurant of the area.

Return home.
