Ideal for lovers of nature and ancient villages, this tour revolves around Lake Bolsena and its wonders, including a boat ride on the lake, a visit to fishing villages and a visit to a local winery.

DAY 1: Arrival

Arrival and transfer to the hotel. Depending on the arrival time, it is also possible to arrange a quick visit to the neighboring villages before the overnight accommodation.

DAY 2: Boat tour on Lake Bolsena, winery and Montefiascone

Breakfast and departure for Capodimonte, a small village perched on the shores of Lake Bolsena. Here the group will enjoy a guided excursion by boat. A panoramic tour with historical notes and curiosities about the towns that overlook the lake, as well as the Bisentina Island and the Martana Island. These two islands, first owned by the lords of Bisenzio, then by the Farnese and the Papal State, were disputed for centuries. 

In the late morning, guided visit of Marta, a tiny village of fishermen. The center of this village lies on a hill where, in 1260, Pope Urbano IV built a clock tower overlooking the lake.  The houses built into the tuff, the external stairways and the narrow lanes make this center unique and enchanting. The group can also enjoy a walk along the shoreline, where at the end of the fishing day, the fishermen arrange their boats and stretch their nets out in the sun.

Lunch in a local winery at the end of the visit to taste the famous EST! EST!! EST!!!, a mildly aromatic wine with apple notes and high acidity produced in this area.

In the afternoon, transfer to Montefiascone to enjoy a free visit of the birthplace of the wine EST! EST!! EST!!!. Montefiascone is an ancient Etruscan city and it is located on the southern shore of Lake Bolsena. Rich in frescoed churches, this town is unknown to most but well deserved to be visited since it has played an important role in ancient times for the Tuscia region.

In the evening, return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 3: Bolsena

Breakfast and guided tour of Bolsena, the picturesque village which gives its name to the lake it overlooks. Rich in palaces, squares, churches and restaurants (where delicious dishes based on the lake’s fish are served), this lovely village dates back to the 3rd century BC. Bolsena’s main monument is the Cathedral of S. Cristina, dedicated to an 11-year-old girl martyred during the reign of Roman emperor Diocletian. This cathedral was a stop for pilgrims on the route of the ancient Via Francigena to Rome.  

At the end of the visit, free time for lunch and shopping during the afternoon.

In the evening, return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 4: Pitigliano, Sovana and Sorano

Breakfast and departure for the territory called “Triangolo del Tufo”. 

This land takes its name from the large tuff area on which the two wonderful little towns of Pitigliano and Sovana have been built.

Guided visit of Pitigliano, called “the little Jerusalem of the Tuscan Maremma”. The name of Pitigliano derives from combining together the names of Petilio and Celiano, the Romans who, according to the legend, founded the town . Inside its walls there is a synagogue and a ghetto, where in past centuries the Jews fled when hunted by popes. Pitigliano, which is surrounded by the deep gorges of two rivers, is characterized by medieval stone streets and brown-red stone houses that gives the village an evocative appearance.

Free time for lunch.

In the afternoon, free time to visit Sovana, a small and perfectly preserved village.

Like other neighbouring towns, its history is characterized by the continuous struggles for the control of the town from the noble families of the time.  Sovana gave birth to Ildebrando di Sovana, later Pope Gregory VII. Pretorio square is the heart of the town, where many monumental buildings, such as the Palazzo dell’Archivio, Palazzo Pretorio, the Loggetta del Capitano and the Palazzo Bourbon del Monte are located.

After the visit, we suggest the group to stop in Sorano to take some photos. Sorano is an ancient village that, thanks to its beauty, it resembles an open-air museum!

In the evening, return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 5: Civita di Bagnoregio, olive oil mill and Villa Lante.

 Breakfast and departure to Civita di Bagnoregio for a guided tour. Due to the fact that the mountain where the village was built is endlessly eroding, Civita is also known as “The Dying Town” and  that it can only be reached by crossing a narrow pedestrian bridge. This unique village is submerged in the fabulous setting of the “Calanchi”, an area which guards cultures, ancient traditions and an amazing landscape.

Free time to enjoy lunch.

In the first afternoon, visit of a traditional olive oil mill. Guests will be shown the whole milling process, at the end of which a tasting of oils and “bruschette” will be provided.

The afternoon continues with a guided tour of Villa Lante, which is considered the perfect Italian Renaissance Garden. The Villa is embellished by dainty fountains, decorated tanks, water games and statues made of “peperino”, the typical stone of the area.

In the evening, return to the hotel, dinner and overnight stay.

We don’t want our guests to leave without a tasty souvenir of this trip: that is why a gastronomic lottery of typical Italian cold cuts will be offered during the last dinner together, as well as a parting gift: a bottle of high quality local extra virgin olive oil.

DAY 6: Departure

Departure and return to home.  Depending on the departure time, it is also possible to arrange another visit before returning home.
